Royal Phlouging Ceremorny

  Royal Ploughing Ceremony

12 May
The Royal Ploughing Ceremony marks the start of the new rice planting season and is an ancient tradition that dates back to the Sukhothai period (1257-1350AD). The ceremony is an ancient Brahminical rite which is carried out in the hope of providing a bountiful crop come harvest time. Performed by a master of ceremonies known as King Meakh, he circles a field three times whilst being followed by a woman known as Queen Me Hour who plants seeds. Based on a number of signs read from the Earth, King Meakh determines the weather patterns and predicts whether or not this year will provide a good harvest.

The Crocodiles

The Siamese Crocodile
The Siamese crocodile is a freshwater crocodile native to Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, East Malaysia, and Indonesia, (Borneo and possibly Java)

The species is highly endangered and already extirpated from many regions. In the wild they prefer slow moving waters like swamps, rivers, and some lakes.

At the SnakeHouse there are several enclosures for different sized crocodiles. Most adults do not exceed 3 m (10 ft) in length, although there are hybrids in captivity that can grow much larger.

List of Snakes in Snake House Zoo

The Snakes

King Cobra (Ophiophagus Hannah)

It seems unfairly menacing that a snake that can literally "stand up" and look a full-grown person in the eye would also be among the most venomous on the planet, but that describes the famous king cobra. King cobras can reach 18 feet (5.5 meters) in length, making them the longest of all venomous snakes. When confronted, they can raise up to one-third of their bodies straight off the ground and still move forward to attack.

  Rock Python (Python sebae)

African Rock Python average 18 to 20 feet long, but can grow up to 28 feet long. Their scaly skin glistens but is dry is to the touch. African Rock Pythons are tan with brown spots that have black outlines. A tan V-shape marks the face.

Mangrove Snake (Boiga dendrophila)

The Gold-ringed Cat Snake or Mangrove Snake (Boiga dendrophila) is a species of snake that belongs to the genus of Boiga. They are one of the biggest cat snake species, averaging in lengths between six to eight feet. It is considered mildy-venomous, but moderate envenomations resulting in intense swelling have been reported, though there have been no severe cases of hospitalisation or fatalities

Malayan Krait (Bungarus conditus)

Kraits contain neurotoxic venom which is much more powerful than the common venom of most other venomous snakes.  A bite from a krait will quickly induce paralysis and is fatal 85% of the time.  Krait anti-venom is often ineffective.  Kraits are however nocturnal so they do not often come into contact with humans frequently.

Oriental Whip Snake (Ahaetulla prasina)

A mildly venomous, yet docile species, the Oriental Whip Snake is commonly found in forested and rural areas. It feeds on vertebrates, including small nesting birds, lizards and frogs.

The SnakeHouse Company was registered in the year 2002 in Sihanoukville by its Founder,

Mr. Dorashenko is a professional biologist, who has earned a masters degree in reptile zoology, also known as herpetology, at the University of Tashkent in Usbekistan. Mr. Dorashenko came to Cambodia in 1992 and he did spend some time working for the NGO Wild Aid, as well as an adviser to the Minister of Environment, Mok Mareth. He has also designed Cambodia´s premier zoo at Phnom Tamao, a place giving refuge to a variety of species, such as the rare sun bears, gibbons and tigers.
At the company´s areal at Soviet Street in Sihanoukville, the SnakeHouse Bungalows & Restaurant are located amidst the exotic environment and atmosphere of a snake & crocodile farm. The snake farm houses around 20 varieties of Cambodian snakes safely in terrariums - among them king cobras, kraits and green vipers -  which are positioned partly in and around the restaurant. Some of the snakes came from villages around the country, while the deadly green vipers, cobras and pythons were caught by Mr. Dorashenko on his wildlife expeditions.

There are a number of accidents with snakes at Cambodia’s countryside, at the SnakeHouse they treat every year over 200 Cambodians for snake bites.
